Febooti Command line email

December 19th, 2008

Today begins a series on IT tools. Febooti command-line email is a tool that you can use to send email from, well, the command line in Windows. That’s helpful in many situations where you’d like another tool to alert you when things go wrong, or send you a report, or send you a text message. Many tools will allow you to run a batch or command file, but not all of them are mail enabled. And many programs that do send mail don’t use TLS, or authentication, or allow you to change the port. Problem solved. Febooti does it all. It’s one of my favorite tools. I use it with backup notifications, security system alerts, antivirus reports, windows startup and shutdown notification and a thousand other places.

Daylight Savings Time updates

March 6th, 2007

Daylight savings time is changing this year. While not quite the Y2K that the media is making this out to be, it is quite important that your Windows desktop PCs and servers are updated, as well as Microsoft Exchange Server. Even Windows Mobile (your smartphone) has an update available. If you are using the Outlook calendar, and sync with a Windows smartphone or PDA, you should update your systems. The dates between March 11 and April 1 are most affected, especially with repeating appointments.

Nonlinear Tech Offers Remote Access

If your company is looking to save money, you can often do so by allowing employees to work from home. This saves money by reducing the need for in-house resources. However, in order to allow employees to work from home, the enabling technology must be in place first. Using a Virtual Private Network, you can accomplish this; it allows employees outside the company to appear in the company’s internal network, using a secure encrypted layer. The employee needs only a VPN software package and a high-speed internet connection. The company only needs a VPN router or VPN service on the server.
